What this site is

Vanward is an independent, informational travel guide covering freedom camping and self-contained campervan travel in New Zealand. We are not a campervan rental company, self-containment certifier, booking agent, or affiliated with the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association, the Department of Conservation, or any council.

Acceptable use

You may browse and use this site, including the Certification Check tool, for personal, non-commercial trip planning. You may not scrape, republish, or redistribute this site's content in bulk without our written permission.

Content ownership

All original text, design and code on this site belongs to Vanward unless otherwise noted. You may quote short excerpts with attribution and a link back to the source page.

Accuracy disclaimer

Freedom camping bylaws, fine amounts, campsite facilities, and rental prices change and vary by council or operator. We make a good-faith effort to keep this guide accurate, but you should always confirm the current bylaw, fee, and facility status directly with the relevant council or operator before relying on it — this site is not a substitute for that confirmation.

The Certification Check tool

The Certification Check is a quick informational self-assessment based on the general NZS 5465 self-containment criteria. It is not a substitute for an official Self-Containment Warrant of Fitness inspection by an authorised certifier, and passing it does not mean your vehicle is legally certified self-contained.

Liability limitation

Freedom camping and van travel carry inherent risk, including fines for bylaw breaches and the practical risks of remote travel. This site provides general information only; it is not legal advice, safety advice, or a substitute for checking the current rule with the relevant council. We are not liable for any fine, loss, or damage arising from your reliance on this site's content.

Third-party links

This site may reference or link to third-party councils, apps, or operators. We do not control and are not responsible for their content, availability, or current accuracy.
